Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content the source that AI answer engines quote. Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes for a sentence inside an answer: in Google's AI Overviews, in ChatGPT and Perplexity results, in Gemini, and in whatever assistant your buyer opens next.
The shift matters because the click is no longer the first contact. A buyer asks a question, reads a synthesised answer, and forms a shortlist before visiting a single website. If your brand is absent from that answer, you are not competing late. You are not competing at all.
GEO and SEO are not rivals
The most common mistake is treating GEO as a replacement discipline. It is not. Answer engines are built on top of retrieval, and retrieval still rewards the fundamentals: crawlability, site speed, internal linking, topical depth, and links from sources that matter. How answer engines choose what to cite
Different systems, similar behaviour. An answer engine decomposes the prompt into sub-questions, retrieves candidate passages, then assembles an answer with citations to the passages it leaned on. Being retrieved is necessary; being quotable is what gets you cited.
Passages that get cited tend to share five traits:
- They answer the question directly, in one or two sentences, before elaborating.
- They are self-contained. The passage makes sense lifted out of the page, with no dependence on "as mentioned above".
- They contain specifics: numbers, dates, named methods, ranges and thresholds. Vague copy is unquotable.
- They agree with other credible sources, or explain clearly why they differ. Corroborated claims are safer for a model to repeat.
- They come from a recognisable entity. The model has seen your brand described consistently across your site, profiles and third-party mentions.

Consistency of how your business is described, using the same name, same category and same claims, across your site, LinkedIn, directories, review platforms and industry lists makes you a resolvable entity rather than an unfamiliar string.
The nine-part GEO checklist
1. Lead with the answer
Put a 40-60 word direct answer immediately under each H2, then expand. Write it so it survives being extracted verbatim: define the term, state the outcome, name the mechanism. This single change does more for citation rate than any other formatting decision.
2. Write to questions, not keywords
Prompts are longer and more conversational than queries. Build sections around the actual sentences buyers use, such as "how much does X cost for a 20-person team", "what breaks when you do X" and "is X worth it for a services business", then use those as H2s and H3s.
3. Make the page structurally parseable
Short paragraphs. One idea per block. Descriptive headings that state a claim rather than tease it. Tables for comparisons, ordered lists for sequences. Retrieval systems chunk pages; clean structure means clean chunks.
4. Add real specificity
Replace "significantly faster" with the number. Replace "many businesses" with the segment and size. Include ranges, timeframes, prerequisites and failure conditions. Original data, even a small internal benchmark from your own client work, is the most citable asset you can publish, because nobody else has it.
5. Ship the schema
Structured data does not force a citation, but it removes ambiguity about what your page is and who stands behind it. Use Article or BlogPosting with a real author entity, FAQPage for question blocks, HowTo for procedures, Organization with sameAs links, and BreadcrumbList. Keep one canonical @id per entity across the site so your organisation and authors resolve to the same node everywhere.
6. Build author and organisation credibility
Named authors with real credentials, an about page that states who you are and what you have shipped, and consistent bios across platforms. Experience signals matter more when a system is deciding whose claim to repeat.
7. Get corroborated off-site
Industry roundups, comparison listicles, review platforms, podcasts, expert quotes in journalists' pieces, community answers. Answer engines frequently synthesise from third-party comparison content rather than vendor sites, so being present and accurately described in those sources is often the deciding factor.
8. Keep pages fresh and dated
Visible publish and update dates, plus genuine substantive updates. Assistants favour current sources for anything that changes, and 2026 buyers ask questions in ways that imply recency.
9. Don't neglect the technical basics
Crawlable HTML rather than content that only appears after client-side rendering, fast pages, sensible internal links, clean canonicals, and images that carry descriptive alt text, the same discipline covered in our image SEO guide. Also decide deliberately what you allow: robots.txt rules for AI crawlers determine whether you can be retrieved at all, and blocking them to protect content has a visibility cost you should price consciously.
How to measure GEO
Rankings do not capture this, so track four things instead.
Assistant referral traffic. In GA4, segment sessions by referrer for AI assistants and answer engines. Volume is usually small; intent and conversion rate are usually high.
Citation share. Maintain a set of 30-50 prompts a real buyer would ask. Run them monthly across the major assistants, log whether you appear, which page was cited, and who appeared instead. That competitor list is your GEO content roadmap.
Branded prompt accuracy. Ask each assistant "what does [your company] do", "who are alternatives to [your company]", "is [your company] good for [use case]". Wrong or outdated answers point straight at gaps in your entity footprint.
Downstream evidence. Direct and branded search volume, and a simple "how did you hear about us" field on your forms. Buyers increasingly say an assistant recommended you.
Set the baseline before you start, or you will not be able to tell whether the work paid off.
What not to do
- Don't publish AI-written filler at volume. The bar for citation is specificity, and generic content fails it while damaging site quality.
- Don't stuff prompts or hide instructions in page text. Attempts to talk directly to models in hidden text are trivially detectable and reputationally expensive.
- Don't abandon your site because clicks shift. Your site is the corpus everything else is built from.
- Don't chase every assistant. Find where your buyers actually ask, usually two platforms, and win those.
A realistic first 90 days
Weeks 1-2: baseline measurement, prompt set built, technical crawl and schema audit. Weeks 3-6: rewrite your ten highest-intent pages answer-first, add schema, add original data or benchmarks. Weeks 7-10: publish three to five question-led pieces aimed at prompts where competitors currently get cited and you do not. Weeks 11-12: off-site corroboration push covering listings, comparisons and expert contributions, then re-run the prompt set and compare.
